Malaria Prophylaxis

Malaria is a serious parasite infection that is transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes. The parasites are microscopic and found in the blood of infected people. There are different types of malaria parasite and although the infection they cause is similar. ‘Falciparum’ malaria is the one that causes the most severe infection. Symptoms of Malaria include high temperature accompanied by shivering, sweating muscle aches, headache or vomiting. Malaria can be deadly if untreated.

Doxycycline

 

Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to prevent malaria. It is suitable to protect against malaria many countries and needs to be taken daily, from two days before entering until four weeks after leaving a malaria area.

 

When to start the course: You need to start taking doxycycline 2 days before you enter a malaria area, throughout stay and for four weeks after your return.

 

Dosage: The standard dose for malaria prevention is a 100mg dose of doxycycline per day.

 

Who can take it: A Prescribing Pharmacist will assess whether doxycycline is suitable for you. Doxycycline is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under the age of 12.

 

During your course: Doxycycline can increase your sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreen.
Additional precautions: In addition to taking your antimalarial as prescribed you need to practise insect bite avoidance.

Atovaquone / Proguanil

Dosage: The usual dose for malaria prevention for adults is 250mg/100mg per day and 62.5mg/25mg per day for children.

 

Who can take it: Atovaquone / Proguanil is a prescription only medication, the Prescribing Pharmacist will assess whether you can use it. It is not suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

 

Additional precautions: In addition to taking Atovaquone / Proguanil you need to practise mosquito bite avoidance.
